Nas-Time Is Illmatic Movie Review: Nas-Time Is Illmatic Full Movie Watch Online Free The close-packed buildings of the Queensbridge projects in Long Island City, Queens, loom large in the documentary “Nas: Time Is Illmatic,” their mazelike mass a vivid emblem of stifled living, yet also borderline abstract in their strange geometry. They tower notoriously in the life and rhymes of the rapper of the title, who laces his streetwise lyrics (here emblazoned in subtitles) with flashes of coolly unnerving invention. Released on the 20th anniversary of Nas’s debut album, “Illmatic,” this compact film is a look back at those origins, not unlike one of his songs in intent but at a more meditative tempo. Even before his skills set him apart, Nasir Jones noted his singular upbringing by his beloved mother and father, a jazz and blues musician. Clips and interviews — with Nas, his disarming brother, his father and figures from the New York hip-hop timeline of feats and feuds — illustrate both his feverish drive after a close friend’s death and his distinction. The brevity and focus of the film are a gamble on the part of the director, who goes by the graffiti-derived moniker One9.
It could be seen as a bit of a victory lap, with plenty of room for expansion, especially for fans. But despite some conventional moves here and there and a weakness for the cult of genius, the documentary sustains that uneasy mood cast by Nas’s expression as a child on the “Illmatic” cover, sobered by experience and wisdom before his time.
